What is it like to live in La Paz, Baja California Sur?

What I rediscovered when I came home

I can't count how many times I heard that La Paz was peaceful, beautiful, safe… and, somehow, also “boring.”
I grew up here. And like many people who grow up in a quiet place, I dreamed of leaving. So I did. I lived other lives, tried other rhythms, experienced big cities, traffic, noise, different kinds of opportunities.

But a few years ago, I decided to come back. Not because I gave up —but because I chose to return, fully aware.
And coming back to La Paz has been one of those decisions that change everything.
That’s why I want to share what it’s really like to live here —through my own eyes, without filters or exaggeration— in case you’re also thinking of changing your life, your sea, your pace… or just your perspective.

What I fall in love with again every day

The first time I walked along the malecón again after so long away, I realized the sky here is unlike any other. The sunset colors are almost ceremonial. And people… they still look you in the eye and say buenos días.

Living here doesn’t feel like an endless vacation. But there’s something in the air —in the calm, in the sea, in the way time feels less urgent— that reminds you it’s okay to slow down without giving up on your dreams.

There are little moments when I stop and think: “yes, this is life.”
Like taking my daughter to the beach after school, having breakfast without a rush, or just opening the window and feeling the ocean breeze.

The good stuff you might not expect

Coming back helped me see my city with new eyes —and understand why so many people want to live here.

La Paz is still an affordable city in many ways:

  • You can buy a bright, spacious home without a 30-year mortgage.

  • Healthcare is solid. Private hospitals offer great care, without long waits.

  • There's virtually no traffic. (Seriously, being five minutes late here is a lot.)

  • Life feels simpler. And that, even if it sounds cliché, is priceless.

And more and more people from Mexico and around the world are choosing La Paz as their home. There’s community, diversity, and so many stories crossing paths every day.

The parts that challenged me (and still do)

Of course, not everything is perfect.
Summer heat
is real. The kind of heat that makes you plan your day around air conditioning. You learn to wake up early and enjoy autumn and winter even more.

You’ll need a car. Public transportation exists, but it’s limited. If you want to explore or live outside downtown, having your own wheels is essential.

And yes, things take time. The pace here is slower, more relaxed, less structured… and that can be hard to adjust to if you’re used to a big city mindset.

But I’ve also learned that this pace teaches a different way of living. A softer way. A way to work, raise a family, and just be —without constant pressure.

Coming back home… and choosing to stay

Maybe you’re considering moving, retiring, investing, or simply shifting your scenery.
I don’t have all the answers, but I can tell you this:
La Paz is a place you feel. It teaches you to slow down and look again. It gives you space to start over —barefoot, if you want to.

I came back. And now I help others do the same, whether it’s their first time here or a return.

I’m not here to convince you. Just to share what I’ve lived.
And if I can help you figure out whether this place is right for you, I’d be happy to.
