How to Feel Like a Local in La Paz (Even If You’re Not From Here)
When I moved back to La Paz after two years in Vancouver, there was one thing I didn’t expect to relearn: how to drive.
The traffic rules are technically similar to those in Canada or the U.S., but here, only about 20% of drivers follow them consistently. At first glance, it might feel chaotic, or even dangerous. But once you settle in, it stops feeling strange. You get used to the rhythm. It’s a flow. And somehow, it works.
That was one of the first lessons I relearned after coming home: La Paz will offer you a different way of living. Slower. Simpler. More human. Once you stop expecting things to work exactly like they do "back home," everything starts to feel a little lighter, and a lot more enjoyable.
Eat like a local, live like a local
Being here isn’t just about buying a house. it’s about building a life. Go beyond the touristy restaurants. Try the taquerías, the corner bakery, the local seafood spots. Buy your produce at the farmer’s market. Say yes to the street food stand everyone lines up for.
Support small businesses, visit community events, and smile at strangers.
Little by little, you’ll stop feeling like an outsider, and start feeling part of the rhythm of the city.
You’ll feel welcome when you open up
I’ve noticed my clients feel most “at home” when they discover those little places, the cafés, shops, and parks where locals gather. The moment they let go of expectations and start embracing what makes this place different, the community embraces them back.
One of the best ways to feel like a local? Talk to locals.
Say hello to your neighbors. Ask for recommendations. Listen to their stories. You'll be surprised how warmly people respond when they see you want to belong, not just pass through.
Manners matter
In Mexico, manners still mean something. People are kind. Respect for elders is deeply rooted. Kind greetings, a “buenos días” or “con permiso,” can open a lot of doors.
One coffee, one shared table, one unexpected connection
The other day, I was at one of my favorite cafés, Exquisito on Allende Street (their carrot cupcake and chai latte are a dream). An older gentleman asked if we could share the table.
Of course, I said yes.
We ended up having a warm and insightful conversation. He shared memories of the La Paz he knew when he was young. I shared a little about my journey home. It was a small, spontaneous moment… but it completely made my day.

In the words of a few who found home here…
Lynn came to La Paz “just to explore.” He made an offer on a house that same trip. What won him over? The relaxed vibe, the safety, and the quality of local healthcare.
Chris, a fellow real estate agent, traveled all over Mexico and chose La Paz for its perfect balance between adventure and civilization. “It’s everything I love about a small town, with the benefits of a real city,” he told me.
And Kim, another colleague and now close friend, fell in love at first sight. “It’s laid-back, the people are kind, and my quality of life here has completely changed for the better.”
In short…
To feel at home in La Paz:
Accept the slower pace
Support local businesses
Learn to flow with the lifestyle
Talk to your neighbors
Be curious, kind, and open
You don’t need to be born here to belong here.
You just have to show up with heart.
