The Cost of Living in La Paz: The Most Valuable Things Don’t Always Cost More
When I moved back to La Paz, the first thing that struck me wasn’t a price tag —it was color.
The sea, the sky, the bougainvillea on the corners... everything felt brighter. But what truly stayed with me was something deeper: how warm and helpful people are here.
Life here runs on a different rhythm. It’s not about how much you check off your to-do list or how many notifications you get.
And yes, money matters —of course it does. But I’ve learned something beautiful: you don’t need to be wealthy to have a rich life here.
What used to be a luxury, here is just… everyday life
Elsewhere, going to the beach might mean saving up for gas, buying a ticket, planning a weekend getaway.
In La Paz, we have gorgeous, clean, peaceful beaches just minutes away —and they’re free.
You can snorkel with sea life, walk barefoot in the sand, watch the sunset from the malecón...
Things that in other places are reserved for special occasions, here are part of your weekly routine.
The warmth that doesn’t come with a price tag
One of the most beautiful parts of life in La Paz is how deeply human the city feels.
People say hello. They smile. They chat with you at the store, at the park, at the bank.
After living in big cities like Mexico City or Vancouver, I’ve come to see that in those places you move fast… but connect less.
Here, life crosses paths with others all the time. And that kind of warmth? You can’t buy it.
Simple things… that aren’t luxuries here
Eating well doesn’t have to be expensive.
Fresh ingredients, food stalls, local markets… It’s easy to enjoy good food without draining your budget. Even having someone help clean your home is affordable here.
Of course, not everything is perfect —if I’m being picky, I’ll admit it’s hard to find great cheese or a proper bowl of Vietnamese pho.
But when I see my daughter running on the beach, when we sip something cold by the sea, when we make plans without worrying too much about money… I realize we’re living something special.

Does money go further here? Yes —especially when you live like a local
La Paz can be very affordable, especially if you integrate.
Eat like a paceño, shop like the locals do, explore the places where people actually live and breathe —not just visit.
That doesn’t just help you save money. It helps you belong.
And that’s priceless.
Is it worth it? I think so.
My advice to anyone coming from a big city and worried about cost of living is this:
Don’t try to copy and paste your life from there, here. Live the way people live here.
La Paz has its own way of giving you quality of life.
It doesn’t take wealth. Just openness, simplicity, and a willingness to slow down and connect.
And if you’re curious whether this could be the place for you, I’m here.
